An ultra-modern boutique property, everything about this place is chic and trendy. The staff are young and hip (if sometimes a little fake-eager), and all facets of the decor are custom-made, right down to the "rope room", a lounge area in the luxe house Japanese restaurant decorated in jet-black twists of hanging rope. The Darling gets huge numbers of Asian high-rollers who come to gamble at the casino next door, and is rumored to be popular with international celebs as well (though I didn't see any). Rooms here are beautiful and space-age: recessed flat-screens, shower heads, and desks in tidy alcoves. Everything from the lights to the blinds to your wake up call can be programmed into the TV via remote control, and the mini-bar? It's automatically computer-controlled and billed too. I love the design sensibility at this place, and the outdoor lap pool and lounge on the 5th floor are smashing places to chill out with a cocktail in-season. As a downside, the Darling's Pyrmont neighborhood is a bit distant from many of Sydney's top attractions, unless you're looking to gamble.

If cards, dice and flashing neon lights are the way you like to roll then roll on up to the Darling hotel. The Star Casino next door is no Las Vegas but when you’ve got Sydney on your doorstep you don’t need it to be. I admit that I couldn’t help feeling like a child in a theme park in this place, as you are filled with adrenalin as soon as you walk inside. (Maybe they spray pheromones around the place, which lure your senses…and your credit card to overindulge.) Each guest room is not only oozing with style and sophistication, but everything from the carpets, to the wallpaper to the bathroom tiling to the in-room technology is bespoke. With impeccable luxury comes high prices of course but if you really think you are worthy of being pampered and metaphorically drooled over – and aren’t we all every now and again – then the Darling hotel should be on your bucket list. One other thing I should mention is that with all the bling, this hotel surprisingly boasts ‘sustainability’ and energy efficiency to its credentials.Recommended for:Luxury Travelers

Was a little apprehensive about this place before arriving as it's part of the Star Casino complex in the rather sterile, corporate development that is Darling Harbour. If you can accept that there's nothing which speaks to the city's heritage within a one-mile radius then you'll be happy enough. For a city where many of the hotels just don't try hard enough, the rooms are both modern and stylish - with lots of gadgetry to keep you entertained. We took a suite called Jewel, which enjoyed good views towards the harbour, albeit over Pyrmont. A good find.
