- The Equus HotelFirst to ReviewNov 03, 2013
I finally had the chance to visit The Equus recently--and I can't wait to recommend it. The hotel has been tucked away in western Waikiki for decades, but in the last few years a total renovation and re-imagination of its potential took place, and it's completely awesome. It's also still under the radar, so rates are often exceptional. The Equus is owned by the Dailey family, well known on the island for their polo-playing prowess and beautiful property on the North Shore where even Prince Charles has played the game. They've carried their love of horses through the new property decor, with sort of a Ralph Lauren meets Old Hawaii meets hipster boutique style to it. Few hotels in Waikiki manage to capture vintage Hawaii as well as this, too--it's very cozy and made me feel nostalgic. And yet the hotel also embraces a lot of progressive elements, including tech touches and environmentally-green guest rooms. You can even rent an environmentally friendly car from them at the front desk. They also really connect you into the horse scene here--you can ride on their North Shore property, plus get free tickets to a match during the polo season. As a horse lover, this of course was very exciting for me! But my favorite aspect of the hotel was the aloha I felt upon arrival--really, it was like being welcomed by family. Very Hawaiian spirit here, totally warm and real. Excellent beaches are just around the corner.

This family-run establishment has deep ties to the sport of polo in Hawaii, a passion that both inspires the Ralph Lauren decor of the property and connects guests to thrilling and unique local activities. Every guest checking in during polo season is offered two complimentary admission tickets to the island's famed Hawaii Polo Club polo games, held at the family's magnificent 100-acre North Shore beachfront property (where guest weddings may also take place). In addition to polo matches, visitors can also join in polo lessons or take a spectacular horseback trail ride along the property atop real polo ponies. Completely renovated from top to bottom, The Equus features an original and inviting blend of vintage Hawaii equestrian style and modern tailoring. Guests are greeted with fresh pineapple juice and a shell lei, plus enjoy a weekly wine reception. The hotel's intimate lobby offers a computer station and lending library. A small swimming pool, sun deck, shaded lounge area, and barbecue grill are also onsite. Guests may rent an environmentally friendly car at the front desk, and parking is available (fee).
Guestrooms at The Equus are fully environmentally friendly and plushly comfortable, with air conditioning, pillow-top beds, flat-screen LCD HDTVs, Keurig coffee makers, free Wi-Fi access in all rooms, mid-size refrigerators/freezers, FACE bath amenities from Sweden, hair dryers, alarm clock radios, direct-dial telephones with voice mail and call waiting, and safes. Most also have private balconies, and some include a wet bar. A variety of room sizes are available, including a one-bedroom suite.
