Incredible hotel. Hosted Will & Kate after their wedding. Some great history and spaces to explore throughout the hotel including a piano room.

We returned to the Banff Springs since our last visit reviewed below. The rooms are getting updated and the amenities are upgraded--like flat screen TVs, and wifi--making the hotel stay a better experience.

This short trip was a gift to family members so the Banff Springs Hotel was the only choice since it was supposed to be a treat. The hotel is the classic and historic luxury hotel in Banff. Besides the beauty of the setting and the historic importance of the hotel, it also offers extensive indoor space to walk and shop if the weather is inclement. As it turned out, the weather was unseasonably warm so we were able to wander outside and enjoy the mountain setting.

We had four rooms which were very comfortable and reasonably spacious. But the best price we could get was almost $300 for one standard room and $400 for some of the others, which seems high for the off season month of April when it's getting too late to ski and too early to golf. And there are extra charges for many things such as parking. We took our dog which was an additional $25 charge. We have the Fairmont President's Club membership so internet access was free and we received two upgrades for free.

Otherwise, we have absolutely no complaints. Service was excellent and we had good meals in Castello Ristorante and the Bow Valley Grill.

    2012 UPDATE

I stopped by again a few weeks ago on a Warm and Sunny Sunday Afternoon. Unfortunately, ours was a day trip from Calgary and there was precious little time to do anything but scratch the surface of this wondrous part of the Canadian Rockies.

My Canadian friend was driving, but I was the one that really knew my way around, as I gave her step-by-step directions to get here off the Trans-Canada Highway. Once we arrived, I showed first directed them to the important spots (e.g., bathrooms and a choice store to buy our spouses a gift) and then led them to the back deck for a signature view of the surrounding Bow Valley and Tunnel Mountain areas. Someday, I'd prefer to wake up to all this with Gayle by my side.

I have never actually stayed here. But over the years and several times that I have come to Banff, I always stop in. I have been here during all 4 seasons and the Banff Springs and the surrounding National Park have a different unique beauty each time I visit.

I love the architecture inside and out. I love walking the grounds and sitting (with my favourite adult beverage) by the back view of the valley below. I also stop at the Canadian Pacific store and other places within their sizable shopping arcade.

Most of all, it's just a very classy and elegant place. And even though I haven't yet been a paying guest, hotel staff has always treated me with kindness and respect.

Spa and Restaurants are 5 Star. Sushi/Castello's/Banffshire for a fine dining experience. Buy a spa treatment and enjoy full access to all of the spa facilities.

The Banff Springs is the closest you'll get to an old world castle in Western Canada. Classic architecture set amongst the green pines and the snow capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies. The grand lobby is grand and the rooms themselves harken back to a bygone era of finery and pomp.

This hotel is a castle located in some of the most majestic views in the Rocky Mountains. The service is top notch by everyone! Though you pay a premium to stay here it's an excellent luxury getaway.

Rated the #8 best hole in the world and the best par-3 ever.
From an elevated tee isolated amid the boreal hush of a Rocky Mountain forest, golfers hit their shot over an impossibly picturesque glacial lake to a small sloping and heavily bunkered green set in the shadow of Mount Rundle.

This is my "go-to" hotel in Banff. Even when I am staying there it always seem to be the central action. The rooms are all across the board some small some large some funky shaped. The hotel and surrounding trails are beautiful. There is a fun and inexpensive irish pub just behind the hotel.

Probably one of the most breathtaking hotel in the whole country. Even if you are not staying there, it's still worth a visit. A castle in the middle of the mountains! The hotel, built in 1888 is a National Historic Site. Fantastic scenery!

The Fairmont is the best place to stay in Banff. The rooms themselves aren't always that large or modern, given the old school castle-like construction. However, everything else - the location, restaurants, spa, hot springs, service, golf course and general ambience is top notch. The Sunday all-you-can-eat buffet brunch at the Bow Valley Grill is one of the best eating experiences for any food-lover - not to be missed.
