Although my tastes tend to lean towards modern décor, sleek lines and Asian-inspired themes, I have always had a soft spot for the historic Hotel Vancouver. Stepping into the lobby is like going through a time-warp from modern glass city to old-world charm.
I love the rooms, with their high ceilings and plush beds that encourage frequent use of the snooze button. If you have an extra $100, book a room on the Gold level which has its own concierge and private lounge, and includes a deluxe continental breakfast, afternoon canapés and honesty bar (for two people sharing a room, it pretty much pays itself off).
My only qualm with the hotel is the brightly lit, somewhat imposing Gucci, Omega and Louis Vuitton stores in the lobby. They take attention away from what is otherwise a beautiful lobby, where live piano floats from the lounge, and framed black and white photographs showcase the hotel’s transformation over the past 73 years.
High-end retail aside, in my opinion, this hotel is a gem. It's maintained a true traditional character without feeling aged around the seams.

Is there any better place to have high tea other than The Fairmont Hotel Vancouver? Not sure, but this was a great way to “get your culture on” in Vancouver, BC.
I made a reservation a month in advance, but upon arrival at the scheduled time my name was not on the calendar. Not a problem, since we got there at 2PM (when afternoon tea starts) they were able to seat my party.
For 36 Canadian dollars, you get a variety of petite sandwiches, scones, desserts, and your choice of tea. Yes the cost of afternoon tea is expensive, but it really is worth splurging on if you're on vacation!!! You can probably find some online deals (I saw some couples with print outs of promotions). This isn’t your average small cookies that don’t fill you up kind of tea party, this is a pretty filling meal (and yes you will have leftovers!).
The only downside to my experience was that the service was incredibly slow. That and they lost my reservation!
Pros to having high tea at The Fairmont:
1) The atmosphere is classy and picture worthy
2) Their tea selection is large and you can tea how premium the teas are
3) Their petite sandwiches are all delightful
4) Even the desserts were scrumptious! I’ve never had a better scone!

OK, I've not yet stayed here, although I usually stop by the Lobby area to admire the elegant beauty of it all when I'm in town.
But the real reason I'm Yelping this fine old Canadian Pacific Hotel is that in front was the first and so far only time that I was solicited. I'm sure, I have walked past several situations before, but in these matters, quite frankly I'm clueless. Plus I have never felt that I had to go for hamburger, when there was steak at home.
So I'm standing there and this really ugly woman walks up to me and asks me if I want a back rub up at her hotel room. I think I said "Yuck" in a loud voice and quickly walked away.
