Sometimes when you walk into a place it feels like you've been there before. Maybe it was in a past life or maybe it's because it just has the feel of home. Walking through the front door of The Ferry was like walking in through the front door of my grandmother's house - in thirty seconds I felt at home. Bed and Breakfasts that decide to go down the authentic road can so easily fall into the trap of kitsch. The same-same identikit bought at the same place as they fit out Irish Pubs. Not so here - the adornments feel authentic - because they are. This building has a long history - first as a pub over a century ago and now a B&B. The hosts are absolutely lovely people and the garden surrounds are a feast for the eyes. Nestled beside a recently revived historic bridge a 10min drive from Queenstown - this place feels miles away, centuries old and just about perfect in every way.

Ferry B&B happily feels like it’s in the middle of nowhere, being 15 minutes drive from central Queenstown, beside the Shotover River. Despite it’s remoteness it’s actually smack bang in the middle of everything Queenstown has to offer – from wineries and ski fields to the more adrenalin or urban options. Originally a hotel built nearly a century and a half ago it has since morphed into a B&B, with the owners having done their best to retain the quaint olden days feel – think brass four poster beds, copper saucepans and French-polished furniture. The B&B and its lovely cottage garden nestle beside the historic Shotover Bridge, part of the local walk and cycleway – perfect for the more active types. If you’re into fishing be sure to have a chat to the knowledgeable owner Kevin before you head out. Oh and do me a favour – find out why it’s called the Ferry as I forgot to ask!
