This hotel really takes its history seriously. A landmark building, the Gershwin is situated in what used to be the Tin Pan Alley, where Gershwin and other composers created the pop songs that dominated the 1930s and 1940s. Today, the Gershwin shares the block with the Museum of Sex - a fittingly bizarre combo. The hotel's exterior architecture is quite distinct, painted in fire-truck red with blob-like lamps protruding from the walls. It looks like an octopus poking its tentacles out of the building. The hotel's whimsical character is even more apparent in the rest of the building. In addition to being a hotel, the Gershwin also doubles as a museum. Pop art can be found in the hallways as well as in the room, and each month, the lobby features a different artist's works. The Andy Warhol-esque prints add whimsy to the rooms, each of which are uniquely decorated in bright, playful color schemes. Bathrooms are small, and the bed and linens are not very luxurious, but it's a great value in a historic building with tons of character.
