The Getty Villa is definitely much smaller than the Getty Museum. You get to check out some cool villas and enjoy the nice weather out by the fountains. It's a nice place to take a stroll, relax, and be outside.

The "other" (and original!) Getty, the Getty Villa is home to J. Paul Getty's personal collection of ancient art in a Mediterranean villa setting. Admission is free, but I think they recommend you reserve tickets because it is smaller and has limited capacity. It's almost like a mini version of Hearst Castle... very beautiful grounds too!

An amazing museum full of ancient artifacts inside the many restored buildings on the property. The property and the view also provide an aesthetic experience that rivals the very art inside. Great food, reasonable prices, and a great way to relax within the Los Angeles Metro area.

The Villa is interesting and there are some good exhibits here, but it's mostly gardens and sculpture. Truthfully, I found it all a bit surreal as the architecture is modeled after an ancient Italian Villa style but all quite new. Being perched on a cliff over the Pacific, you'd think there would be a big space with a breathtaking view, but no such luck for visitors. I understand it's also a residence for artists, so maybe they're saving the good stuff for the private viewers. : )

Great museum. It's so nice to see artwork in settings that reflect something about the time and way they were presented historically. Seeing Greco-Roman art in a Greco-Roman style building rather than the boring white cubes in some museums. Even my husband (who gets dragged to every museum, sometimes grudgingly) enjoyed it.
