At the Hay-Adams, rates are based on the view. You want to look at the White House in your pajamas? It's going to cost you. But it's worth it, at least once! The other views are St. John's Church (nice), Lafayette Square (too much like Haight-Ashbury for me) and (I swear) the alley.

If you can do it, try to get a room with a balcony. But only in April or September, otherwise it will be too hot or too cold.

The hotel describes their restaurant, the Lafayette, as “stately” and it fits. Upscale décor, upscale food, a pianist at the Steinway – make sure you have your jacket and tie.

You're steps from the White House and a short walk to a Metro stop, so you should be able to save the $45 a day in valet parking. And if you want something different (but not cheaper), try the Oval Room, a nearby four-star restaurant frequented by people you will recognize if you watch C-Span a lot.

Hands down my favorite hotel in DC! Amazing service, fabulous rooms, car service, a beautiful terrace, fabulous bar (full of DC types) and you're right next to the White House! Worth every penny.

The Hay-Adams is another boutique hotel in Washington, DC. It has a little under 200 rooms, so accommodation can be difficult to obtain. However, if you can get a room consider yourself lucky!

Literally, across the street from the White House, the Hay-Adams permeates old style luxury without the snobbishness that sometimes attaches to it. Dog friendly, if you can afford it, it's a fine place to stay and/or dine.
