The pictures that The Herbert posts online are a bit deceiving. We arrived and we upgraded to a King room on the fly so that we would have our own bathroom in our room; otherwise, you have to walk out to the hallway to use restrooms and showers. Granted, the hotel is CHEAP for San Francisco and it's close to Union Square. Definitely in a great location, but you pay for what you get. If you have kids, please be careful with the heater; it's an old school heater...hot metal in the open.

Exposed brick accent wall, exposed beams, gorgeous hardwood flooring, are usually what you expect to read from descriptions of new condos and lofts in San Francisco. Well, that trend has finally hit the hotels. I was shocked and really had no idea what to expect from the bare minimalist lobby. The bright and spacious rooms were absolutely gorgeous with a hint of hip and modern flair. Free Wi-Fi is available, remote controlled a/c, and a common room is located on the 2nd floor (chess, microwave, sink). Herbert Hotel definitely screams boutique, but still seems to be missing a basic amenity– no mini-fridge. The location is right on Powell overlooking the cable car line and downtown shops. If you happen to be staying on the 1st or 2nd floor, it might get a little noisy since there’s an H&M Men’s Store next door thumping loud music during the day. For the pricing, you’re definitely paying for the location and probably the renovations since it’s fairly new.

The exterior of the Herbert Hotel and the minimalist lobby do not do the rooms any justice. They are stunning! They are like new lofts, with brick walls, plus beds, lots of sun and chic furnishings. Wi-Fi is free and there is a nice lounge on the second floor where there are microwaves, a television and a chess set.
The hotel’s greatest feature is its location. It is on Powell Street between the Cable Car Turnaround and Union Square, directly in the middle of brand-name shopping and popular restaurants. The Westfield San Francisco Centre (the really huge mall) is a short walk away. BART and the Muni Metro are nearby too, in the event you’d like to get out of downtown for an adventure. It’s simply an amazing location if you want to be in the heart of the action.
Service was friendly and professional. They did a really great job with this hotel in every respect.

Considering the places I've stayed at in San Francisco, the Herbert Hotel tops them with location near the Powell BART station and proximity to Union Square. It was my 2nd time running the NIKE Women's half marathon this past weekend and I needed a place to shut my eyes. It's not the swankiest joint but it fit my needs.
Our room, 515, was on the fifth floor facing O'Farrell. You could see the Macy's billboard across the way. There was very little street noise but I could still hear the trash trucks in the wee hours of the morning. Thank goodness we didn't see any homeless people in the alleyway this time around. The room was clean but wasn't ready when we checked in after 3 pm. They were really understanding about the race and let us check out late. I'm not sure if we were charged for the late check-out but we were charged taxes and fees on top of our Booking.com reserved rate. I'm not sure if this is normal for Booking.com reservations. I really liked that our room had an en-suite bathroom as well as another bathroom and shower down the hall for our use if needed. There is a rec room on the 2nd floor with microwave and free wifi. All of the rooms have WIRED wifi so you don't need to worry about internet access. They have cables in the room so you don't need to bring your own. The only thing I can think of that I'd want in the Herbert is a mini fridge. Otherwise, the staff was friendly and I felt safe leaving my belongings in the luggage storage area. Thanks for a good stay.
