First, there are two “castle” hotels with pirate names, Blackbeard’s and Bluebeard’s, overlooking downtown Charlotte Amalie. It is easy to get them confused when looking to make a reservation or telling a taxi-man. Blackbeard’s is the smaller of the two. It is part of the historical tour that visitors and cruisers can take. Yes, the pirate signage is touristy – but fun. The stone tower was once used as a jail for pirates when they were able to catch them. The metal statuary of these swashbucklers has fascinating, descriptive plaques. The pirate with the hook for an arm represents Peter Pan’s Captain Hook.
As the sun sets, the patrons around the bar, like the staff, are cool types. The tower that now serves as a cistern, is reflected in the sizeable swimming pool. The hillside views of downtown are superlative. Guestrooms have partial views, best from the balcony. Simplistic, spacious, I liked mine - W4. The couch is from the ‘80s maybe and there’s no phone, but there is a flat-screen, cable TV, contemporary A/C unit, and attractive tile work in the bathroom. A fun quotient and caring staff, make for repeat guests.Recommended for:
