First, an historical footnote. When I was little, every now and then there'd be an emergency dash from the rugby field to the casualty department here when this was one of central London's main hospitals. Thankfully, I escaped with nothing more serious than stitches and some mild concussion each time. So it was all the odder to step through the doors of this site and find that the people in white coats now are waiters of the highest order and not emergency room clinicians. The Lanesborough is the epitome of luxury - where British tradition meets tech modernity. Many hotels tend to either go overboard on the rooms and then neglect their public spaces or vice versa. The Lanesborough has struck a happy balance between the two, making the bar and restaurant as much a pleasure to visit as the rooms are to stay here. The hotel even boasts tea sommelier Karl Kessab, who'll be as happy to advise on what blend to put in your cup as the more nuanced points of British tea time etiquette. Shall I be mother?

Literally, a lodging treasure offering luxurious accommodations and outstanding service across from the Wellington Arch, Hyde and Green Parks in the prominent Knightsbridge district in Central London. All of its 93 rooms feature a rich traditional English décor with deep pile carpets and gleaming mahogany, and modern entertainment apparatus; though many of the rooms are slightly outdated. Sony VAIO laptops, Wi-Fi Internet, unlimited movies, fresh fruit, mineral water, tea/coffee, pressing service, and personalized stationery are treats offered to all guests. Lovers of light Mediterranean flavors and impressive wine collections will appreciate the the Michelin starred Apsleys’ Restaurant. Quintessential English Afternoon tea served on a fabulous traditional décor ambiance downstairs is popular among travelers; though it is slightly orchestrated. The Library Bar offers a superb collection of vintage cognacs and tailor-made cocktails on a relaxing ambiance adorned with piano melodies. The Spa Studio with its selection of therapies and treatments along with the modernly equipped fitness center are perfect spots for unwinding.

Fabulous hotel. High end all the way without being ostentatious. Kind of like Cheers in that everybody knows your name! Bathrooms so clean you could lick the floor. Delicious food -- and lots of delish cocktails. Fab cigar bar that is outdoors but heated so you can enjoy in the winter. Concierge can get you into any restaurant with minimal notice. Oh and the Butler...well, what happens at the Lanesborough stays at the Lanesborough ;)
