Hidden away in plain sight, the Langham Yangtze brings a touch of architectural character to an otherwise bland strip of gray-faced buildings. The art deco style of the exterior carries through to the main lobby where an elegant piano greets visitors before a stately staircases leads up to Reception. Small touches throughout the hotel including a framed ladies’ purse from the 1920s make the hotel much less sterile in feel than other properties. I was personally most impressed by the rooms themselves, with their small private balconies and flat screen televisions over the bathtubs. The televisions in the bedrooms display images of old Shanghai—a thoughtful touch that is consistent with the boutique feel of the entire hotel. The spa is also not to be missed!Recommended for:

Just a block or two away from People's Square and a 20 minute walk from the bund this beautifully restored building is a lovely choice for a long weekend in the city. The heavily Art Deco themed hotel was reminiscent of what Shanghai might have been like in it's heyday in the 20's and 30's. Lots of rich reds and golds, beautifully ornamented. The winding staircase that is the center piece to the lobby creates a very homey feeling... like you're in a very wealthy friend's restored mansion. Staff was incredibly helpful and knowledgable of the area with dining and site-seeing suggestions, as one would expect from a Langham. Standard guests rooms are very nice with comfy beds and large bathrooms, they don't have the crazy Toto toilets like the other Langham at XIntiandi. Very nice restaurant options- Japanese, Shanghainese/Cantonese, and western options with a buffet as well. The gym is quite small but has everything necessary to stay in shape while travelling, although people who workout while on holiday baffle me. Spa is very nice and relaxing with beautiful service rooms and high quality products and well-trained staff.

Set in the heart of Shanghai, People’s Square, is an unassuming building with every window boasting a mini balcony. The Langham Yangtze Boutique boasts two dining outlets on the first floor, Ciao and Ciao Bambino- both Italian fare with Bambino being more of a café. The Japanese restaurant on the 2nd floor is minimally designed and contrasts nicely with the rich red carpet and decoration of the hotel. Did I mention there is a beautiful winding staircase in the lobby that makes you feel like you are in an old film. The rooms are bright and spacious, the outer ones each with a little mini balcony overlooking Shanghai. The spa incorporates the Langham signature omega shape and transports you into a world of bliss as you walk down the hall. The hotel is ornately designed, but the rooms have a much simpler feel. Great for a business traveler or someone on a quick Asian getaway. The rich reds and blacks make me think this would be a wonderfully cozy winter hotel.Recommended for:
