The Latham calls itself a “European boutique hotel.” It is understated, with warm tones and lovely artwork. Although it is on busy M Street in Georgetown, it is set back from the street, and is quiet and cozy. The room did have a Continental feeling to it.
There are dining and bar options at all levels in Georgetown, along M Street and Wisconsin Ave,

This is a great little hotel if you want to visit Washington but not be right downtown. This stretch of M street has a nice variety of stores, bars and restaurants. It's a 3 block walk to the Metro but there are always cabs by the enclosed lobby entrance. They do have efficient valet parking only. There is a very fancy and good restaurant in the hotel and you should see the menu first before going there...it's spectacular although a bit high-California cuisine. Also, there is a GREAT French pastry store with delicious BLD, and daily made baguettes, poastries, sandwiches, soups and good coffee. You are right between a modern shopping street and the old Chesapeke and Ohio canal, that is a linear park that winds through the whole SW side of the city. Great for walks of just to sit and breathe the fresh air. The rooms are good and the service, too. A wonderful place to fall back into after a busy day at the Sithsonians or the many museums and monuments. There is also a clever concierge can get you tickets, etc. if you give them some time.

You can pass by The Latham a hundred times, and not really notice it. It is actually behind the entrance on M Street. Given the quiet nature of the hotel, I suspect most of its patrons like the low profile.
I like the location. M Street has all kinds of eateries, bars, clothing stores and antique shops. La Madeleine, which has quick French food, is right next door. And there's a little flower shop, La Belle
Florist, nearby if you need one!

The rooms are minuscule and make walking in with your luggage pretty much impossible. I had a room here where the bathroom hadn't been cleaned and there was used soaps and things in the room. I asked to be changed to their then sister hotel and they did. Not sure how it is now, but I hope it's gotten better
