Definitely off the beaten path. This museum is not huge. However, it is very informative and educational. Additionally, it is right next to Union Station another worthwhile tourist destination.

Not necessarily my favorite thing to see in DC. It is of course worth a visit just for being the capital and for being so iconic but really it is just another government building. Unless that is really your thing I wouldn't plan to spend too much time there.

Always one of my favorite museums in D.C. It's a great collection to explore, whether by tour or just wandering around. Van Gogh is my favorite artist and his works are always being marveled by many people when I go. Monet, the only da Vinci in the Americas, Dali, Pollock, and Rothko are some of my other favorites here! Could ...

Not one of the free museums, but it is a pretty fun one nevertheless. If you are interested in espionage I would recommend taking some time and checking this museum out. It isn't overly serious, which maybe why I find it so enjoyable.

The original Smithsonian Institution building is a really beautiful piece if architecture. Since its inception, The Smithsonian has increased in size and scope to include a multitude if museums and galleries in the DC area, but the original building is still a sight to behold.

Build on a hill to overlook the city, it is quite a sight if you are standing at the foot of the Capitol Hill. The building is mostly monumental, not beautiful, and has a statue on top that draws the attention.

This is one the National Park units. This where John Wilkes Booth shot President Lincoln and across the street is where he died. Both historical sites have an elevator now so it is now accessible. No disability parking in the area. You will need about 2 hours to view everything.

Five stars because of the history and symbolism that the archives hold. Everything else becomes irrelevant.

OK, this is not my favorite museum. Best to go when they are having a special demonstration. But I do like the food! While they have your standard cafeteria fare, they also feature foods eaten by native peoples of this Hemisphere. Get your children to try the fry bread!

Very cool spot to visit. Free to get in and a beautiful view of the city and a beautiful building on the inside in it's own right. There's normally a park ranger at the top that you can unofficially ask questions about the city to. There's a good food court at the base of the building- not great food options ...

Forgettable, but if you have time to kill, a potential amusement. The area relies on tourists and teenagers for its economic well-being. It borders on parts of D.C. that aren't the most secure.

This a modern art museum on the National Mall and is part of the Smithsonian institution so it is free. The building itself is also an attraction looking like some form of space craft. It contains a lot of famous artists works so give it a try you might like it.
