Very friendly brewpub in the Rocks area (the oldest in Australia apparently). Try the Nelson's Porter.

Billing itself as Sydney's oldest continually-operating hotel, the Lord Nelson was a place that I liked as soon as I walked in. The lovely old building in the Rocks has a B&B feel, and rooms with the original rough stone walls, and richly aged wooden furnishings. It's a little bit out of the way (not really convenient to transport, and a bit of a walk to either the harbour or the CBD), but the fine brasserie-restaurant and frankly excellent old-style pub downstairs are more than adequate compensations. When you've had one too many, just climb the stairs to your bed!

If you want a little piece of England in Sydney head to The Lord Nelson. They are beer fanatics and if they don't have it you don't want it.

Its claim to fame: the oldest continuously licensed pub in Sydney. For those of you who like beer, stumble no further than the Lord Nelson pub and hotel. It’s charming, it’s boutique, it’s so solidly built that if the end of the world came upon us, this place alongside cockroaches, would be the only survivors. Located in the hills of The Rocks, you come to the Lord Nelson to experience Sydney as a local would. There are nine unique rooms in this 1800s heritage hotel (some with private and some with shared bathrooms), and for workaholics and smartphone junkies, wi-fi is available (at a charge). However, with award winning beer and a bar full of enthusiastic locals downstairs why on earth you would want to stay in your room is beyond belief!
