I had always heard about how nice the Athletic Club was. But originally it was open to members only. In fact at one point it was an upscale apartment building that Charlie Chapman called home. This year they are celebrating their 100th anniversary and are open to non members visiting Los Angeles.

Walking into the lobby today you feel the quiet and elegant presence of the place. The decor is beautiful, lots of wood and rich dark colors. There is a lot Brass and every small detail is perfection. There is a dress code, business casual.

The rooms are beautifully appointed with all of the perks you would expect in a place like this including, ipod stations and flat screen TV. The beds are dressed in very nice linens and pillows and look very inviting .

There are two very good restaurants on the premises as well as a ballroom and meeting rooms. There is also a very nice sports bar. Breakfast is served buffet style.

Patrons get free access to the athletic club which features work out stations, a swimming pool and indoor running track. There is also a skin care salon available.

There is a terrific lounge area up on the roof where you can have a drink and enjoy the excellent view of the Los Angeles skyline. Very well located in the middle of downtown L.A. I would recommend it to anyone that likes traditional quiet luxury.

A hidden gem downtown or anywhere, this outstanding hotel within the LAAC is open to all despite the "members only beyond this point" sign. Beyond the small non-descript lobby, it’s like stepping into “The Great Gatsby” with historic elegance plus all the modern amenities. Spacious luxurious rooms are filled with refined design features. If you want your own recumbant bike, just ask. From the furnishings to the artwork, there’s nothing generic here or trendy. Just classy.
The Olympic size swimming pool features beautiful tile work with a running track above, and a full-size basketball court next to it. Of course, there's a fitness room. The bar, game room and restaurant as well as the entire facility requires "business casual" attire so this is for grown-ups not flip-flops, t-shirt clad kids. Though the “members only” sign may be a bit off-putting, the hotel is open for business to all. I want to move in just like Charlie Chaplin did decades ago.

In the midst of all the traffic, this athletic club is a great escape for those who want to squeeze a workout as part of your work day or while you're visiting. There are ample machines for cardio and strength workouts as well as free weights. Feel free to bring headphones to plug into the machines to watch a variety of channels. If you prefer to swim or play sports, such as basketball, then you have these options too.

I like that it's never crowded or stuffy given sufficient ventilation. Moreover, an endless supply of towels are provided during and after your workout in case you want to shower. The shower heads spray with power to help massage the body with fragrant shampoos, conditioners and body washes without drying our skin. A giant mirror with blow dryers at each station enables you to clean up with cotton swabs and puffs as well as wear make-up in case ou need to head out directly to an engagement. Finally, you can relax with lemon water and coffee in the lounge.

The staff is friendly. Moreover, the place is clean and brightly lit to help motivate you to exercise without feeling trapped in a cage like a gym rat. Parking can be tough on the street, but there are plenty of garages nearby priced at reasonable rates.

While I have been inside, I have never stayed here so I can't comment on the quality of the rooms. I give it a high rating because of its historical value. Established in 1880, the Los Angeles Athletic Club was the city's first private club. Its current home, completed in 1912, was designed in the Beaux Arts tradition. The location of its 100-foot swimming pool on the sixth floor rather than in the basement was unique for its time. Today, in addition to its club membership, the club operates as a hotel, available to the general public.
