Situated down a quiet, leafy lane in South Yarra, the Lyall Hotel and Spa is every bit as serene as you’d expect. A fireplace welcomes you inside the entrance of the sunlit interior. Dark grey walls lead down long corridors to the well-outfitted spa area where guests can arrange for treatments ranging from a hot stone massage to hydrotherapy ($80/person or $140 for a couple). The rooms are nice, comfortable and clean and come complete with a small kitchen and living room plus a balcony on most. My favorite thing about the Lyall is that it is in walking distance to so many great restaurants, bars and shops. I could imagine spending a lovely girls’ weekend here getting spa treatments, going out to eat and shopping.Recommended for:

The best and worst thing about the Lyall Hotel is its location. It would be a lie to call it central – it’s a walk from South Yarra train station, but it is on such a quiet, and beautifully leafy street that I wouldn’t be able to say I hated the location, especially given its proximity to Chapel street, Melbourne’s worst kept secret.
The hotel feels very personal, to the extent that I would unabashedly say that the lobby’s fireplace – and all the other fireplaces it has on each floor’s lounge area – felt a like a grandpa’s den. Or grandpa’s den if he had an unusually young wife who made the den feel just slightly more modern that he would have liked. Reception, the bar, the walkway to the rooms all blend together in the lobby in a way that feels cosy rather than cramped.
Every room has a king bed and a very decent living room. Most have a kitchen, and while there is no restaurant in the hotel it curiously has 24 hour room service. The gym is more than adequate, and the spa is to die for, with a menu as long and elaborate as you could imagine (Moroccan mud bath, anyone?) It’s the spa that elevates the place from 4.5 stars to the 5 they advertise, but I’d only consider that an accurate star rating if you take advantage of the spa.
