I’ve walked by downtown Portland’s Mark Spencer countless times without ever realizing it was a hotel. From the outside, the large old building housing the hotel looks more like a luxury apartment building or maybe an office—you won’t see any fancily garbed doorman here. Once inside, you’ll find floor upon floor of rooms and suites (some with kitchenettes). While many of the rooms have a bit of a 1970s-feel to them, the Mark Spencer is currently undergoing renovation, updating its rooms to match modern aesthetics.
Special bonuses for staying here include free continental breakfast, Wi-Fi, and newspapers (including the NYT). There’s also an espresso machine in the lobby that’s accessible to guests 24/7, free of charge. Unfortunately, there’s no room service, but a nearby restaurant offers free delivery.Recommended for:

This place has a good vibe. The lobby has an espresso machine that's open all day, nice lighting, and a low key feeling about it. The bedding in the rooms is nice, but the rooms do look a little like the apartment studios they were at one time. Right now there are kitchenettes in most of the rooms, but they're going to remodel soon and there will be a more modern feeling with exposed brick and just a microwave in each room. By the door numbers there are postcards that guests can take, and in the lobby they have The New York Times. This is a really good area to stay because you're near Powell's and The Pearl section of the city but also just a few blocks from Pioneer Court House Square. This hotel is family owned and historic. The street side rooms tend to get more light.Recommended for:

The Mark Spencer is located in the heart of downtown Portland, just about one block south of Burnside Rd. There are countless restaurants, bars, new and used clothing shops (including the famous Powell's New and Used Books on Burnside and 10th Ave), eateries, bakeries, movie theaters, concert halls and much more-- within minutes of the Mark Spencer in any direction. The location is great for both adult travelers as well children in terms of entertainment. The Mark Spencer has a charming, old style feel to it from the outside with the gaslight style street lights and exterior stone work. The hotel interior and the room definitely have a higher than average feel. I spotted a quaint sitting room type area across from check in that looked ideal for having breakfast. I was told by staff that conference meetings rooms and catering are also available. The Mark Spencer had a great, elegant, but not too fancy vibe to it and I'd totally recommend checking it out.Recommended for:

If you don’t want to be in one of the bigger hotels in Downtown Portland, and you like to prepare some of your own food occasionally, the Mark Spencer could be ideal.
Located on SW 11th Avenue it’s close to about everything downtown including Powells bookstore, the inner SW downtown, the Library, and the NW shopping area as well.
This is a beautiful hotel that was originally a hotel in 1905, subsequently turned in to apartments, and thus has returned as a hotel once again.
The hotel offers a variety of suite rooms with kitchenette at good value for the long term guest. Amenities include a Fitness Center and meeting rooms.
This is an ideal hotel for the long stay business guest as it is pretty centrally located, but it is also good for large social events such as wedding receptions in the ballroom.
The staff is very helpful and professional. They do complement the European style of this hotel. You could find something comparable in London and other European cities. Comfortable and unrushed!Recommended for:
