The Merrion is an extraordinary place. From the street it looks like all the other Georgian buildings in the row. I was expecting some kind of glittering, dowdy restoration – instead, I found a satisfying mix of old and new. Throughout the lobby and public lounges you can see the age in the floors: uneven painted floorboards, faded carpets, select antique pieces. The modern luxury furnishings and decoration embrace this and seem part of it. The same idea is in play in the Cellar, a bar and restaurant in—you guessed it—the cellar, where you eat and drink under vaulted brickwork. The room I was in was exquisite – calm, comfortable, and relaxing. If the weather cooperates, the place to be is the interior courtyard where you can see the bespoke-breed Merrion roses.

This hotel is top class. Ranked as Dublin’s best hotel by trip advisor, it’s easy to see why. When you walk through the main doors you’re met with beautiful shimmering chandeliers, a wonderful sense of history. I loved the drawing rooms where there were, again, large chandeliers and windows looking out on to the two beautiful gardens which have lovely water features, paths and walks around. The hotel is also home to an amazing art collection, which includes Irish and European art. Personally I loved Le Broquay’s ‘Man Writing’ and J.B Yeats ‘Year of sleep” both of which hang in the front hall. If you’re going to stay in 5 star luxury in Dublin, the Merrion is your best bet.
