Unbelievable gallery! Wish we had more time to see all the portraits, but we kept getting interrupted by The Queen who was there dedicating a new wing of the gallery. We were stopped in 3 different parts of the Gallery as she walked past us. We were so lucky to see her 3 times within 1 hour and on our first trip to London. Hearing them play the trumpets when she arrived was fantastic. So lucky to get pictures of her when she was literally 3 feet from us each time we saw her and Prince Phillip. Best part of our vacation!

The best museum in London, with amazing medieval triptychs and a good selection of Flemish Masters, including the iconic Arnolfini Marriage by Jan Van Eyck. Lot of Leonardo here, too. Great bookstore...the one downstairs is bigger.

Free Admission! Like many of the art galleries in London :) Exciting range of portraits-- ranging from stodgy to fun. Love Warhol's take on Queen Elizabeth.

This is another great museum in London that has fantastic exhibits and is also FREE (though they suggest a donation)! You can spend hours (days?) wandering the halls looking at great art.

Perfect for the art lovers...or children who are fans of the "Katie" series of books. My daughter walked around looking for the paintings that she saw in her "Katie Meets the Impressionists" book. I had a migraine the last time that I went so I didn't enjoy it as much as I could have. I highly recommend hydrating well before entering as it was a bit stuffy.

One of my favorite museums in the world and because it is free, you can drop in for an hour or two to visit your favorite paintings. Look for the Savoldo Mary Magdalene; the Caravaggio and other beautful paintings. There are a few rooms with Impressionist art including several by Monet and some gorgeous Dega paintings. They are directly up the stairs from the main entrance. Do not miss the bookstore in the Sainsbury Wing, especially the novels based on famous paintings. Although you cannot take photos of the paintings, I often photograph the books on display so I can order them from the website once I am back at home. Rent one of the audio guides--very comprehensive. Just enter the nos. by the paintings.

An extensive and excellent museum, considered one of the best in the world. Do not miss the National Gallery under any circumstances if you are in LDN.

one of my more favourite galleries in London - this gallery, as you can tell from the name is solely for portraits - dating back hundreds of years, to popular images of celebrities from the current decade. It's a wonderful afternoon spent in London.

One of the few free must see tourist destinations in London. Allocate enough time to wander through all of the galleries and check in advance to see which additional shows will be in the museum - www.npg.org.uk.

This is great place to go see art that looks quite close to reality. Beautiful paintings - there are quite a few that purely technique wise are stunning - how the painter has managed to capture the light. Nothing "modern" artish here, for that visit Tate.

I love that this place is free and you can just walk in and browse for ten minutes or four hours! Make whatever donation you can, and then enjoy the amazing collection of art. My favorites are the Degas' and he's usually grouped with the impressionists -even though he didn't consider himself one! : ) Outside the Gallery is the famous Trafalgar Square, where you can feed pigeons and have a sandwich.

Description

The National Gallery is a world famous art gallery in London, England. Its location on Trafalgar Square only increases its already tremendous draw. The gallery did not spring from a royal collection, as is the case with many European national galleries, but rather began when the British government purchased works from private collectors to display for public consumption. The museum is widely ... read more
recognized as having one of the most comprehensive and outstanding collections of Western painting in the world. It is difficult to pick out highlights from such an impressive catalogue, but readers of this description may recognize Jan van Eyck’s The Arnolfini Marriage, Hans Holbein the Younger’s The Ambassadors, and Vincent van Gogh’s Sunflowers.
