I had a great sunday exploring Hollywood with my sister :) I finally got to see the famous abandoned zoo! It was wayyyy smaller than what I have expected. We jogged up the hill toward the zoo to warm up a bit because it was friggin freezing outside.
The early 1900s zoo is covered in graffiti and interiors were all tagged up. It's sad to think that all those animals were trapped in such tiny space :( looking through those lil windows gave me the chills...

I find an eerie serenity in places such as this. Like a ghost town for animals, this part of a civilization of another era has a concrete beauty to it. Zoos are basically jail for animals, so I felt as if I was exploring a prison as I climbed in and out of these ancient cages.
For being such a secret, this place is really easy to get to. It's just a short walk up from the carousel or one of the many surrounding parking lots. The first man-made rock formations appear to have held large animals, but a short walk up the hill will bring you to smaller cages and even a house (primate housing perhaps?).
I saw a lot of people walking dogs here and I thought it was kind of funny to think of how our society has (hopefully) changed for the better. This zoo has been closed for decades, for the sake of the animals presumably. And now people bring their 4 legged children here to visit the land where their distant cousins may have once lived.
I can't wait to go back another time (not on the weekend) with a good camera so I can see it again from another perspective...
I wonder what future generations will think of the animal jails we have today.
