Foodie options at this swanky hotel include the Pump Room restaurant headed by James Beard award winning chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and the lobby minibar, which features samplings of local favorites like Garrett popcorn and Cora Lee candies. If you book a suite, you get a $100 food and dining credit.Recommended for:Foodies

Formerly known as the Ambassador East, this hotel—and its lounge, The Pump Room—was a veritable hotspot for big-time celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Paul Newman, and Eddie Murphy. Extensive renovations have updated both the hotel and lounge, but even a facelift hasn’t rubbed off all the old-school glam and mystique from this Gold Coast charmer of a hotel.
In a time when jeans are worn in the workplace, The Public remains stubbornly elegant. Seriously, I feel like the people dining and drinking here are some of the best-dressed in town. The hotel is also smack-dab in the middle of the Gold Coast (Chicago’s old-money neighborhood) and down the street from the former Playboy mansion, so there’s an air of timelessness throughout. As for the hotel, it has a pretty lobby, and even prettier restaurant and bar, and appropriately nice rooms. If you got the dough to stay here, you won’t regret it.

I stayed at this hotel during it's opening night about a year ago. As I strolled up to the hotel in my jeans & sneakers, I was immediately embarrassed by my wardrobe. There was a massive line of people dressed in their best, waiting to get into to grand opening party. The hotel staff had a great sense of humor about it and we enjoyed a few laughs while in my grubs. I got changed as quickly as I could and met my friends in the lobby for few glasses of champagne. While this is an upscale, trendy hotel I met very down to earth, friendly people. I loved the location, in a suburb close to downtown. Of course the rooms are brand new and very comfortable. I would highly recommend The Public to patrons looking for a swanky yet comfortable experience.
