The PuLi Hotel and Spa is a serene urban hideaway styled with reclaimed grey brick and sleek black glass. Rows of tall bamboo shield much of the building’s exterior from passersby while a curved drive entices you away from the busy street and into the dark marble walkways. Once inside, the entrance and foyer combine vaulted ceilings with Zen-like décor for an East-meets-West feel. Moving on to the lobby, you’ll find an area as expansive as it is luxurious, dotted with traditional wooden furniture and chic sofas that flow into the spectacular 32-meter Long Bar. Rare in urban Shanghai are the calming views over reflective pools and abundant greenery of Jing’An Park, which lies adjacent to the hotel. Rounding out the impressive public spaces is the Library, a nostalgic study complete with well-stocked bookshelves (free for guests’ perusal) and an exquisite stone fireplace.

Need to relax in Shanghai? The PuLi is exactly where you should go, as soon as you walk into the lobby it’s like being transported to a remote resort in the middle of an exotic local. Check-in is very relaxed and the PuLi has done something that I really appreciate when travelling, the check in counters are lowered so guests sit down while checking in and the staff is standing at a lower level. I always think this is a nice tactic because traveling can be exhausting and when I arrive at my destination the last thing I want to do is stand more while checking in. Off the lobby is a library from which guests can check out books (although most are in Mandarin) with large leather couches for relaxing and enjoying a cup of tea or coffee. There is also a very nice bar and outside seating area at the far end of the lobby for guests. Rooms are beautiful and nicely set up with moveable screens that allow guests to choose how much privacy they desire. The rooms also have a charger/plugin box in the closet for travelers who always forget which cords they need when travelling.

The PuLi Hotel seeks to differentiate itself by being an Urban Retreat- and that’s exactly the vibe you get when you walk in the door. The reception counter is recessed, so you are seated when checking in and still at eye level- bring on the relaxation. The décor is delightfully minimalist with thoughtful touches throughout. It’s rustic luxury. I loved the fact that the room numbers were displayed in such a way that when looking down the hall, you could see each room number without having to be in front of the door. You are in the center of downtown Shanghai, yet it feels like you are at an exotic resort- woven tabletops, sparse decoration, bright accents and fresh fruit everywhere- it definitely is an urban oasis. In warm weather the terrace outside the long bar in the lobby is where you will find most guests, but until then the infinity pool looking out over the city is where you will find me! The toiletries are Essential Essence of San Francisco and big enough to last you at least a week- and I have long hair! It’s always great when a five star hotel has five star products that leave your skin soft and your hair smooth. The location of the PuLi is perfect- it overlooks Jing’an park and is a 3 minute walk from Jing’an Temple-a Shanghai landmark as well as central transit point.Recommended for:Luxury Travelers
