Raines Law Room has all the allure present in other lounges without the gimmicks of passwords and other methods of obscurity easily circumvented by simply performing a search on Google. The lounge is dimly lit with curtains to provide a level of separation from its busy nature. Each section can summon service by tugging on a light located by the seats. Very handy.

As for drinks, wow. Incredible selection. I had the Wildest Redhead and another that was a derivative of an Old Fashioned. I forget the name, but it was basically just a really good Old Fashioned. I imagine it's hard to go wrong with anything on the menu, as the drinks were made to perfection.

If you show up as a walk-in, do anticipate a wait. I gave my name and then slipped across the street to Rye until receiving a phone call.

Turn down another gray Manhattan street full of nondescript residential high rises. You are guiding your friends to certain spirits and refreshment, but just where those good times are to be found is unclear. After walking up and down 17th Street, looking everywhere for that ‘48’ address you decide that it must be the unnumbered black canopy jutting out onto the sidewalk. Lead your companions down several stairs, ring the doorbell, and wait for the bow-tie wearing attendant to guide you into this intimate speakeasy.

I’ve been to several speakeasy lounges, but herein is the best atmosphere out of them all! Dim ‘ambient’ lighting, comfortable chairs and couches, delicious and strong drinks made in the kitchen, which is also a hang out spot if you’re there on a busy evening. I can’t wait to go back.

In a city full of speakeasies, Raines Law Room comes in as a top contender. Upon entering, the drinking area is very secluded for each group so good conversations can be had with friends.

If you head to the back, where the drinks are made you will notice that it is actually inside of a kitchen. Whether this was accidental or intentional, it is a charming touch.

Their drinks are very good here, rivaling that of any other speakeasy in the city.

An unassuming door located along 17th Street yields Raines Law Room’s sophisticated interior. This Manhattan nightlife attraction offers several experiences: The Lounge, inspired by 19th-century England townhouse decor; The Parlor, a small alcove with just four seating areas; The Kitchen, an energetic waiting room that’s literally a kitchen; and The Garden, an outside area where the herbs used by ... read more
