The Regency Inn, located steps away from City Hall and the Asian Art Museum, is unassuming on the outside, and reminds me of a typical apartment complex, but actually charming on the inside. I really had no idea what to expect, as the surrounding neighborhood is near Little Saigon/ Tenderloin and Civic Center. It’s definitely not the safest at night, so you need to be aware of what’s going on around you if you walk through the area.
The hallways and stairways are vibrant, clean, and welcoming, and the rooms are bright, elegant, and well-kept. Regency was once used as student housing for the Academy of Art, but it doesn't give off a dorm-like vibe. The décor looks older, not in the sense of age, but more like a classic beauty. The room comes standard with a tv, microwave, and mini-fridge. Free Wi-Fi is available, as well as, free continental breakfast in the common room on the first floor. The staff members are warm and knowledgeable. I wouldn't suggest this hotel for travelers with young children, but for younger travelers, this is a budget friendly option near a lot of cheap local eateries. and close to public transportation that can take you all over the city.

The Regency Inn surprised me; I did not think the room would be as nice as it was. While it wasn’t the most modern or chic, there was a classic elegance to it. Rooms include televisions (non-flat screen), microwaves, a mini-fridge and little else. The color to the bed covers (a regal red) makes the room look more royal that it is. But it’s the ample amount of sunlight that really made the room feel comforting. It, along with the rest of the property, was well-maintained and clean. I believe they recently renovated everything.
Wi-Fi and a continental breakfast are both free. The downstairs kitchen area includes toasters, microwaves, coffee and soda. It’s a nice space for relaxing or working outside of your room.
The location can seem a bit sketchy around the block, though it sits a short walk to City Hall and the Asian Art Museum. You’d likely want to be careful coming and going from the hotel during the later hours. Otherwise, this isn’t a bad option for a stay in the heart of San Francisco.
