It’s tough to bag on the Ritz—I mean, it’s the Ritz. The name is synonymous with luxury. And while the Denver Ritz doesn’t fall short on high-end rooms and facilities (not to mention, their first-rate staff), it failed to inspire the sense of awe I’ve experienced when I’ve visited its other properties around the world. And I think it all boils down to its location. Yes, it’s in downtown Denver, but it’s kind of on the edge of it. And yes, it’s a tall building, but it’s shadowed by taller buildings that block out the gorgeous mountain views that are so coveted in this town. The property also doesn’t have a pool (which I think should be standard once you hit 4-stars, much less 5). And it doesn’t have its own gym; it’s attached to a spectacular one, that guests can use free of charge, but it’s not its own. It kind of feels like the forgotten Ritz. Don’t get me wrong—I’d gladly stay here on business but, frankly, if I were paying out of pocket, I’d head to the Four Seasons instead.Recommended for:

The Ritz is, well, the Ritz, and this one delivers on its reputation. The rooms are gorgeous, with lots of space and first-class fixtures and amenities. There’s an Elway’s restaurant on the ground floor and the staff are friendly and down-to-earth. The hotel’s fitness area occupies an enclosed bridge between the hotel and the Federal building across the street. The place is enormous, with a gazillion bikes and elliptical machines, weights, a basketball court and a three-story rock-climbing wall. My one problem with the Ritz is the location: it’s kind of on the outer edge of downtown, across the street from a Greyhound bus terminal, at which point the neighborhood declines considerably. I doubt hotel guests have problems (and there is no shortage of taxis) but it’s not something you expect to even think about staying at a Ritz.
