I don't always play golf, but when I do, I play in Half Moon Bay. The price is steep if you're used to playing the municipal courses on the Peninsula but playing here is a real treat. The course is just beautiful as it is cared for so well. The 18th hole of the Old Course is particularly stunning as ...

This place is sunny, clean, and not so crowded. The people are nice and considerate. I biked along the sidewalk that's right beside the beach and joined a game of beach volleyball with some locals. The sand is also nice and soft.

The Half Moon Bay Coastal trail stretches 6 miles along coastal San Mateo County, from Pillar Point Harbor to Poplar Ave. in Half Moon Bay. On sunny weekend days it can be crowded with strollers, trikes, bikes and walkers. If you plan to ride your bike, try early mornings, or foggy days. There are plenty of restrooms along the way ...

Next to New is in a small white house on Kelly Ave, just off of Highway One. Every corner is full of used clothes, housewares, books, jewelry and collectibles. The place is tidy and everything is well-cared for. I like to start in the rear of the store, stepping outside into a shelf-lined metal container to look at books, furniture, ...

I've never camped here, but often ride by on my bike. You can pitch your tent on a cliff over the ocean. Campsites have picnic tables, fire pits, and restrooms nearby. There's also space for RVs. It can get windy, and it's rarely hot. If you have a bicycle set out on the paved Coastal Trail. Or bring your board ...

This great natural food market stocks local produce and has a staff of smart helpful people. In addition to groceries they have a pretty large selection of prepared food that you can take home or eat in the store. There's a juice bar, coffee bar, and they have free wifi. I often shop for gifts there as well since they ...

Main Street or downtown Half Moon Bay often gets overlooked by visitors because it is not near the ocean, in fact, it almost seems like it is off the beaten path. Set back much further inland (on the east side of the Cabrillo HWY, Downtown HMB actually is a vibrant neighborhood with many nice restaurants and shops (just without the ...

Whether it is socked in fog or brilliant in the sunshine (a slightly more rare occasion), this is a lovely beach just a short drive south of San Francisco. Like all things Bay Area, just be sure you bring layers. And a blanket. And hiking shoes. And probably your surf board. While you're at it, stop and pick up some ...

Cunha's is a great place to buy specialty foods, especially treats made in coastal California. You can get pies from Duarte's, branches of Brussels sprouts, local peas, squash, and strawberries. I like the little bags of grilled artichoke hearts.
