I adore this place, mainly for reasons of nostalgia than what it is today. The art deco building it sits atop of has been known variously as Derry & Toms department store (opened in the 1940s and closed in the 1970s), then the legendary Biba fashion store and today offices and a rather swish and expensive health club. The Grade II-listed gardens took their original inspiration from the rooftop garden at New York's Rockefeller Center. Today it's home to a rather so-so restaurant, nightclub and party venue for corporate events and wedding receptions. There are three thematic gardens making up the outdoor space: the Moorish-influenced Spanish Garden, the Tudor Garden and English Woodland. In 2013 the building was sold for £225m to a firm of German property developers which also owns the site occupied by the Liberty department store. Richard Branson's Virgin group continues to lease the gardens, as it has done since the early 1980s.

When spring is in the air, head to the Roof Gardens! Such a decadent setting in which to drink pimms and nibble on snacks. They often have an outdoor cinema. Great place to host a party. After 10pm on Friday and Saturday this place becomes the ultimate party place. Members only. But you can apply to get on the guest list online.

Quirky tropical garden events space set on the top of an otherwise particularly unremarkable office block in Kensington. Makes for a somewhat surreal setting, and won't wow you with amazing details or service, but at least it gets full marks for originality.
