As you leave Princes Street and the imposing Balmoral Hotel and head toward North Bridge, it's almost impossible not to notice yet another one of Edinburgh's important buildings - The Scotsman Hotel, formerly the home to the Scotsman Newspaper and now a luxury 5 Star Boutique Hotel.
Luckily for lovers of history and architecture, the interior of this building was not ripped out, along with its heart. Instead The Scotsman Hotel is crammed full of important architectural detailing: from the majestic marble staircase that former employees of the newspaper were only allowed to step on, once a year, to the oak panelling and industrial basement below.
Nowadays, this 69-roomed hotel is the only one in Edinburgh which houses its own cinema and stainless steel swimming pool! There's also a popular Spa, a 60-station gym, treatment room, tropicarium, and a steam room and sauna.
Upstairs the rooms are as individual as the hotel is unique. Each room is different: you can choose an Editors Room, or a Publisher and Director suite, or why not aim for the top and book The Barons Suite.
Not overly-done, the rooms are tasteful with subtle touches like tweed headboards, some have curved corner bay windows allowing stunning views of the city afore you. There's monopoly boards for rainy days, free Wi-Fi access, and a secret cupboard where you can leave your shoes to be polished, without being disturbed by someone knocking at your door!Recommended for:
