This pub claims to be the oldest in Edinburgh. It’s located in Duddingston village on the other side of Arthur’s Seat. Arthur’s Seat is the extinct volcano behind Holyrood Palace and the new Scottish Parliament which provides spectacular views if you climb the 800+ feet to the top. You can then descend to Duddingston to quench your thirst at Sheep’s Heid which takes its name from a dish made of sheep’s head. It is no longer on the menu. The pub’s look is very quaint with a dark wooden curved bar and lots of leaded glass used between the bench seating. A large painting of the nearby Battle of Prestonpans in 1745 hangs over the main bar. Outside the rear of the pub there is a little beer garden with lots of overhanging trees and to the back of this is the skittle alley. Good prices for both drink and food.Recommended for:Local Culture

The Sheep Heid Inn is a beautiful, restored traditional 'old man pub' in one of the quaintest villages next to Edinburgh. It claims to be one of the oldest (if not oldest) pub in Scotland and the Bonny Prince Charlie hid out nearby on his campaign to reclaim the English throne. Be sure to check out the 'Skittles', an older form of bowling. Their lanes date back to the early 20th century. The food is also quite spectacular.

This is known to be the oldest bar in Scotland. Like many of the bars in Edinburgh city, it was also renovated and turned into a gastropub. It's lovely inside, a mix of the old with the new. There's lots of variety of beers and cider on tap, and nice small selection of bar foods. It may seem small from the outside, but there's plenty of seating upstairs and outside at the patio area.
