If Descartes had been from London, he perhaps would have stated, "I frequent my local, therefore I am." The Spaniards Inn is a wonderful example of a pub's pub, where you can head with your dog and a good read, to sit by the fire and have a few pints, or bring a group of friends for drinks and dinner, or show up with your love for a mellow Sunday lunch. Central to life in London, the pub is an absolute must.

Gorgeous, old Hampstead pub with capacious outdoor seating that's great for summer. Nice food, good drinks, don't bother with the roasted almonds.

Also one of my favourite London pubs. Takes you back to the 16th century. Best in summer when you can use the garden area in the back, but a winner year around.

This is one of the most amazing pubs in London. Situated on the north end of Hampstead Heath - this pub was built in 1585 (originally as a toll booth). You can feel the age when you are inside - the ceilings are low and slanted. It also has a great garden out back when you get a sunny day - Keats is rumored to have written "ode to a nightengale" here.

A favorite pub of ours, located just off Hampstead Heath. This is a perfect pub for a sunny Sunday afternoon sitting in the expansive garden area or inside on a cold winter's night. Even before you enter the pub, you get a sense of the history and lore this place holds. Fun to take kids and loads of folks bring their muddy dogs after a romp in the Heath.

A country pub in London. Our favorite local place. Dates from 1500. Great Sunday roast. Take a walk on Hampstead Heath and head up here for a few pints and yummy food in front of the fire. The beer garden is heaven in the summer. Dogs allowed! They even have a doggy wash. Not sure it's worth coming all the way up from central London if you aren't going to the Heath already. But planning a day of hiking and a stop in the pub is the perfect afternoon.

Great Sunday Roast and an amazing view of London. Outdoor seating when it is warm is a great location for afternoon boozing in the sun. Make the trek if you are staying in Central London. History of the pub is also cool.

Convenient spot for a quick bite or drink if out for a stroll on Hampstead Heath. Neither what's on offer or building itself gets me raving though. Both mediocre.

A cute little English pub in London but feels like you are in the country side. Built in the late 1500s you definitely get a feel of olde world England as you enjoy a pint or two here.

The perfect Sunday roast. And you can go for a walk in the nearby Heath afterwards.

Description

As one of London's oldest pubs, The Spaniards has earned itself a place in the history books, quite literally. Dickens immortalised it in The Pickwick Papers, and it's said that Keats wrote Ode to a Nightingale here over a claret or two. Indeed, this characterful 16th century inn is a romantic idyll in itself, with a few tales of its own to tell (Dick Turpin was apparently born here, need we say ... read more
