I have a strong love-hate relationship with the Square Grouper. I love almost everything about the place, except for how most of South Florida seems to agree with me. I simply hate the crowds that can turn this lazy slice of paradise into a hammering meat market. Back in the early days, when it was relatively unknown and served as the location for the Alan Jackson/Jimmy Buffett "5 O'Clock Somewhere" music video, it could not have been more perfect. White sand bar yard, a tiki hut, tiki torches, electric blue waters flowing through the inlet off the Gulf Stream and, of course, cocktails - perfection in a cup. The place was - and still is in some respects - a Jimmy Buffett song come to life. This is the iconic tropical beach bar. The one we imagine all of Florida and the Caribbean to be. The real life "Margaritaville" and a fantasy escape perfect for a sunny afternoon.
