The Stafford Hotel

16 - 18 St. James's Place, London SW1A 1NJ, England
4.5
6 reviews

The Stafford Hotel is one of our favorites as well as our correspondent's. With a charming courtyard lined with rooms in converted stables (two-part doors intact) and an old wine cellar filled with great vintages and some WW1 artifacts, and attentive, but not obsequious service, the Stafford is a hotel worth returning to again and again.

Fortnum's is amazing! From the window displays outside we are drawn into the store.. once in the store it is luxury and quality all the day. Colours and smells are spellbinding. I walk past the store most days and marvel at the displays. Sometimes stopping in to meet a friend for a cup of tea.

I attended an Anish Kapoor exhibit here in 2010 that was mind blowing. The exhibit was based around huge volumes of wax. In one room, there were canons that shot the crimson colored wax against a wall, and it then fell onto a huge pile. In another room there was huge blocks of wax on conveyor belts. This isn't saying ...

My lovely host for the day and I ended our tour de London in Covent Garden. We passed by this adorable bakery/restaurant and had to come back for tea after our walk. I am a regular drinker of tea these days and love to have it at night with a pastry. The macaroons at Laduree are fantastic. SOOO delicious. We ...

this hotel is very high end. Classy and sophisticated. The reason i go there.... the bar, especially their champagne selection. Over a weekend expect the bar to be packed full. Dress code is pretty much dress to impress. Keep in mind the door men at most bars in London, or nicer bars, will not let you in if you are ...

A big London art gallery, it's literally a big Cube. I felt very art-y visiting it, and the work we saw was interesting: thousands of tiny photographs of the same mountain landscape in different weather and light, almost like latter day Monet haystacks. Unless you are a visual artist or very into the scene, maybe it's not worth a special ...

I'm not much for clubs or bars, but I did really like Mahiki when I went with a group of friends. They have a really great selection of interesting cocktails that were really delicious and often times very fun to drink (one comes in a pirate leg which my mates rather enjoyed). It's a bit on the pricy side, as ...

For a unique concentration of luxury shopping and historic charm, Burlington Arcade is a must. This passage unites Piccadilly and Bond Street, and glitters with diamonds in handcrafted and vintage settings, contrasted with the scent of Penhaligon's perfume and colors of Laduree macarons.

The epicenter of cutting-edge designer fashion in London, Dover Street Market was created by Rei Kawakubo of the Comme des Garcons empire. The "Market" is actually a five-floor department store with beautiful temporary installations and small, well-curated rails for each designer. The most interesting pieces are the ones by Japanese designers little known in Europe such as Sacai. Also one ...

Another if London's most famous squares, Trafalgar was high on my list of things to visit. Unfortunately, there was construction and preparation for a massive concert going on while I was in town, so most of what I got to see was partially covered or obscured. The area is nice, however!

Spectacular to see the changing of the guard. We were there on Saturday and got to see the horse guard and band as well. It was fabulous, but be prepared to stand for a long time and the. Crowds are unbelievable. Well worth it though.

Everyone who goes wants to see the Crown Jewels which is where lines can be excruciatingly long (I've heard up to 2+ hr waits during the peak of summer). The cafe inside the tower isn't bad -- definitely eat there instead of the less than mediocre options near the entrance.
