The Stafford Hotel

16 - 18 St. James's Place, London SW1A 1NJ, England
4.5
6 reviews

The Stafford Hotel is one of our favorites as well as our correspondent's. With a charming courtyard lined with rooms in converted stables (two-part doors intact) and an old wine cellar filled with great vintages and some WW1 artifacts, and attentive, but not obsequious service, the Stafford is a hotel worth returning to again and again.

One of London's classic places to shop, there is no better place in London to inhale the perfume of exotic teas, shop for frivolous foods with which to stuff a picnic hamper, and generally absorb the atmosphere of English opulence than Fortnum & Mason.

Laduree is known for its macarons. They're really the ones who put macarons on the foodie obsession map. The Burlington Arcade location is good for a quick stop before jewelry shopping or hitting the Royal Academy, and is a much better bet than the Costas, Prets and Neros along Piccadilly for a takeaway coffee.

The Mall is a a road from Buckingham Palace to Trafalgar Square. It's nothing spectacular, but we walked down The Mall on our way to Buckingham Palace and I really liked it. There are lots of trees and St. James's Park is just right next to this street.

A big London art gallery, it's literally a big Cube. I felt very art-y visiting it, and the work we saw was interesting: thousands of tiny photographs of the same mountain landscape in different weather and light, almost like latter day Monet haystacks. Unless you are a visual artist or very into the scene, maybe it's not worth a special ...

Mahiki became famous/infamous as a watering hole for the young royals (Prince William and Prince Harry) and their entourages. It is a strange place - styled as a tiki bar, with super sweet, super strong, exotic cocktails at 20 pounds a pop.

For a unique concentration of luxury shopping and historic charm, Burlington Arcade is a must. This passage unites Piccadilly and Bond Street, and glitters with diamonds in handcrafted and vintage settings, contrasted with the scent of Penhaligon's perfume and colors of Laduree macarons.

The epicenter of cutting-edge designer fashion in London, Dover Street Market was created by Rei Kawakubo of the Comme des Garcons empire. The "Market" is actually a five-floor department store with beautiful temporary installations and small, well-curated rails for each designer. The most interesting pieces are the ones by Japanese designers little known in Europe such as Sacai. Also one ...

Vibrant, fun, great atmosphere, lots of great places to eat and drink both in and outside. Close to the London Eye. Easy to get to from Waterloo station and can then walk along the River Thames to get to London Bridge station. Also close to The Globe (Shakespeare's theatre).

I stopped by here to visit the British Museum. It's a great place to just relax and enjoy the view for several minutes. Very touristy, but I enjoy talking to people. Keep an eye out for thieves/scammers in this area, though I suppose this is true for any touristy spot.

It's Big Ben. An icon for London but still not it's most impressive feature, but then again, I was unimpressed with the Statue of Liberty as well. Impressed at the work that went into making them and the interesting history surrounding them, but, nonetheless not the things they are hyped up to be. The engineering feat that is the Hoover ...
