The Stafford Hotel

16 - 18 St. James's Place, London SW1A 1NJ, England
6 reviews

The Stafford Hotel is one of our favorites as well as our correspondent's. With a charming courtyard lined with rooms in converted stables (two-part doors intact) and an old wine cellar filled with great vintages and some WW1 artifacts, and attentive, but not obsequious service, the Stafford is a hotel worth returning to again and again.

    Pizza East Portobello

3.15 mi from The Stafford Hotel
    1 review

Pizza East is known for its fab pizza, and I'll agree that it's delicious. But when we went to the busy Portobello location on a Friday night, we were shocked by the service. Our waiter wanted nothing to do with us and was clearly annoyed that we ordered just pizzas. I don't think one needs to apologise for drinking water ...

Gets a decent after work crowd, which spills out onto the street. Conveniently close to the South Ken Tube Station.

    The Square Pig

1.27 mi from The Stafford Hotel
    1 review

The square pig is located in Holborn, central London. It's a firm favourite for an after-work drink. It is particularly popular in the summer due to its outdoor patio, a rare feature for pubs in the city's centre.

14/20; Food 7/10, Ambience 3/5, Service 4/5. Located in a well-finished but blandly decorated space just off Islington's main drag Upper Street. The food is definitely above average French fare, making it a pleasant spot for this in North London. Heavy traditional dishes predominate - think meat with potato dauphinoise, etc. Service has varied a bit in my experience, but ...

Very reasonable coffee place across from Borough Market. Service is a bit snotty, but the coffee is excellent.

Giraffe is a UK-wide chain that does brunch, lunch and dinner and caters to families. Food is okay. I wouldn't recommend getting the huevos rancheros (but then again, what was I thinking trying to get a Mexican breakfast at a British chain restaurant?!). Good place to go if you've got children.

Not really sure why (maybe the service or location or the fact that the place is smaller), but this is a better restaurant than Tas Bloomsbury. Probably wouldn't be my first or even third choice for dining in Borough and surrounds, but v respectable.

Better food than Belgo Centraal, but sort of eerie to discover both parties in adjacent tables were discussing their therapists! Nothing wrong with that, I guess, but something about the atmosphere seemed rather self-conscious. Might have been an off-night.

Tries to punch above its weight as a gastropub, but as a local it's fine. Used to live around the corner on Thanet Street and would frequent it often. Nice people.

Have a pint in this pub below the railway arches and feel like you're stepping back into old London. Built in 1872 with some great ales on tap, it's also just behind Borough Market.

One of the best Bagel Bakeries in London. Especially recommended late on a Saturday night when they have just started baking.
