Maybe it has something to do with the close proximity to the Royal York Hotel, but this hotel just didn't do it for me. The whole place looks like its been plucked from a highway-side in the suburbs and gave off a air of business trip indifference and mediocrity...just my feeling though!
The lobby actually looks quite nice, with lots of wood paneling and great lighting. However, the staff were not overly friendly or helpful, which is something I have a tough time looking past. There is also a surprising lack of amenities and services - no pool/fitness centre (you have pay to use the club next door!), concierge service only until 4pm, no internet access (of course, you can pay extra for it if you want), and no parking around the hotel itself.
The one redeeming thing about The Strathcona is the rooms, which are pretty spacious, clean, and well decorated. However, considering the plethora of other hotels in close proximity, you can get more bang for your buck elsewhere!

Set right across the street from the imposing Royal York Hotel and kitty-corner from Union Station, The Strathcona is perfectly located if you're in town to see the major sights, take in a Raptors or Jays game (don't get me started on the Leafs), or for business and/or conference purposes. While there's not a lot of neighbourhood charm in this downtown area, it's easy enough to simply hop on the subway and head out of the core into the boroughs that make Toronto livable. Stylish and upscale without being stuffy, this hotel offers few frills and is more of a base than a destination - albeit a very nice one. The red, white and grey theme of the rooms is fresh and lively and the washrooms are updated and clean. There's a cute, little dining space on the main floor and a pub in the basement filled with after-work types watching the game. While there's no fitness centre or pool on-site, free passes are available to the swanky Wellington Club next door.
