This is as close to the Four Season's s you'll get in the Raleigh area. This hotel is actually 1 town over in Cary. It is stunning and the superior service begins once you pull up to the front valet. (You do have the option to park and that is a very short walk away from the hotel). The valet guys are very professional, quick and courteous. Walk right to the front desk and you'll be greeted by a warm and friendly person ready to give you full attention. The bar is within feet of the front desk. Well worth a stop before you head to your room. It overlooks the beautifully landscaped grounds. There's a huge patio seating area with an outdoor fireplace. Really nice!
The service, drinks and food are divine. Besides seating at the bar, the are tables and chairs laid out to wrap around the bar with walls so there is plenty of privacy without the tables being in separate rooms. It is decorated with beautiful modern art, nothing crazy, I wish I knew a better term for modern art like this. Maybe classy modern art such as handblown glass if that gives you an idea.
Check out the little gift shop around the bend from the bar area for some unique finds. -Local products such as jewelry and handbags. The Umstead has a huge fitness center and a spa that I would describe as suitable for royalty. The rooms are beautifully sized, simple in decor yet sophisticated. Nothing is over the top, just classy.
There are also plenty of great restaurants just a short drive away (across street from hotel grounds) if you're in the mood for something else.

The grounds of this hotel are really beautiful, and although you’re close to everything you could possibly want to access in the Triangle, it somehow feels remote and peaceful. The rooms are pretty nice but I was a little underwhelmed, given the hotel's repuation. I know they're planning to renovate during the second half of 2012 though. The fitness center is one of the best I’ve seen in a hotel - tons of cardio machines and weight machines. The burger I had in the bar was excellent, although pricey, and they offer a nice afternoon tea service (GREAT after your day of luxury at the spa…) The service is pretty good, but it’s a bit pretentious for my taste.

Recovering from Irene (hurricane), we escaped to the Umstead. Demur, but attentive staff, exceptionally delicious food that was healthy, haute-decor and top-shelf accommodations, a world-class spa with attentive and professional staff. In one expression... "best-in-class".
