It’s so sad that the most talked about building of the 1970s has fallen into such a state of disrepair.
The Watergate, home of the famous burglaries, now stands empty and overgrown with vines like Sleeping Beauty’s castle. Doormen at the posh Watergate residences say it’s “closed for renovation,” but it’s been five years and there’s no sign of any equipment or building materials. The Watergate Apartments (part of the complex) are still occupied by the rich and powerful, so the stores on the bottom floor have a thriving business. Its location on the banks of the Potomac and next door to the Kennedy Center make close enough to Georgetown to walk, but if you lived/stayed at the Watergate, you’d just have your driver drop you off.
