Classic 1950s Las Vegas icon, a neon sign done in Googie style. You've probably seen it already in countless movie openings, but go ahead and go see it for yourself. You know you can't resist, right? The sign is all alone in the median in the middle of Las Vegas Blvd, a short drive (or bus or taxi ride) south of Mandalay Bay. Usually you'll find a few Elvis impersonators hanging out here, too, offering to take a photo with you (for a tip).

The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is a Las Vegas Strip landmark funded in May 1959 and erected soon after by Western Neon. The sign was designed at the request of a local salesman, who later sold it to Clark County, Nevada. The sign is located in the median at 5100 Las Vegas Boulevard South, north of the historic stone pillars of the old McCarran Airport on the east side, and across from the Bali Hai Golf Club and the (closed) Klondike Hotel & Casino on the west side. Some consider the sign to be the official southern end of the Las Vegas Strip. The sign, like most of the Strip, sits in the town of Paradise and is located roughly four miles south of the actual city limits of Las Vegas. However, such distinctions are usually ignored by both locals and tourists, who refer to the entire metro area as "Las Vegas".

This is a Classic and Iconic piece of Pop Art, and it was the first thing I remembered as my Dad drove us into Las Vegas sometime in the 1960s. The best knockoff (IMHO) was the Yahoo! sign, now departed from the approach on the San Francisco side of the Bay Bridge.

You simply can't go to Vegas without getting a Facebook profile picture taken with this iconic sign, located just south of the Mandalay Bay. And the best part? It's free! If you've got a car, park in the small lot that can be accessed if you are traveling south on Las Vegas Boulevard.

If you're a tourist in Vegas, this is a quick and easy must-do.

It can be accessed from either side of LV Blvd and there are a few parking spots available. If you do stop for photos, there will probably be other people there too, so you might find someone nice to take a picture for you.

You'll only see it if you get off at Blue Mountain (I-15 N) and make your way onto Las Vegas Blvd. It's iconic Las Vegas. There's parking for you to stop and pause to take photos. You can also stop on your way out too.

Visiting the Las Vegas sign isn't the easiest thing to do, and it's not really close to anything, but I think it's one of those things that you just have to go out of your way to get a picture of.

Interestingly, although Betty Willis' fabled sign itself remains the same, its immediate surroundings morph as rapidly as the town itself. I did an extensive photo shoot in 2004, when you still had to make a mad dash from the Visitor Center's parking lot across the Strip to the median where the sign is located. Later, they added a royal card inlay in the median. Now, it has its own little parking lot IN the much more attractive median with ample barriers to keep fools from running into traffic. I didn't even look to see if the dozens of overhead wires present during my 2004 shoot were still there or had been removed…will have to check next time, during the Golden Hour.

Obviously, if you're visiting Vegas, you have to go to the Welcome sign. We actually didn't get there until we were LEAVING Vegas, but at least we made it. There was a very friendly woman volunteering to take everyone's photos, which was pretty cool. There wasn't too much of a crowd, so it wasn't tough to get the shots I wanted before heading out.

If you're staying at Luxor or Mandalay Bay it's just a short jaunt over to the sign. I recommend going after midnight- the crowds have thinned out by that point.

This is the obligatory attraction in Las Vegas. This sign lights up the gateway to sin city and outside of the Hollywood sign, may be one of the most notable in the world. It is a must-see the first time you go, and is nostalgic each time you go back to Vegas.

I'm totally not a tourist when I go to Las Vegas, but I wanted to make a stop at the Welcome to Las Vegas Sign because I've never been before! Honestly, I never knew that you could stop in this area, let alone park and take a picture....

Sometimes there is person offering to take pictures for a tip, we did this once and they actually took a decent picture (the second time around). My local friends told me that sometimes there's a person with a camera and portable printer! Way to make some pocket change!

Regardless of the time of day, people will stop in and take a picture or two! I’ve taken pictures during the middle of the day and in the EARLY AM; it’s popping at the sign all the time!

You can hardly miss it on the way to the strip. But crossing the road to take pics can be really dicey during the day.

Description

For about a month in 1999, the iconic Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign was completely dark, the result of a past-due electricity bill of $60. The sign would later shut off a decade later, this time intentional, in commemoration of Earth Hour in 2009. Commercial artist Betty Willis created the welcome sign in 1959 and sold it for $4000. Neon white balls, representing silver dollars, spell out “ ... read more
welcome” while yellow incandescent bulbs illuminate the city’s name. From where it stands, the sign serves as a bright welcome for recently arriving motorists, particularly effective as its technically four miles south of the actual Las Vegas border.
