This is a first class Westin in a great location. If you are visiting Chicago I would recommend staying here. You are walking distance to many great parts of the city. I stayed here for 4 nights on a business trip and it was great. Some of the professional teams that come in to town stay here - so if you are into sports that is pretty cool.Recommended for:

The Westin Michigan Avenue is in a fantastic location right in the middle of North Michigan avenue. Room rates are very reasonable and the property is comfortable. It is a good option for a no frills business trip.
I've stayed at the property before and I knew what to expect. It feels a bit more like a "stereotypical" US Sheraton than it does the slightly more premium Westin brand. The heavenly beds are great. The lobby feels like a Westin (i.e., slightly more stylish) but the other public spaces and the bathrooms feel a bit dated / institutional -- i..e, plastic toilet seats, old tubs, drab hallways.
The surprise for me this time around was the extent to which service levels have declined. I accidentally left my toothbrush at home so asked for one after checking in. It took two calls and nearly 40 minutes for me to get one.
Other service issues I noticed:
- slow check out. Only one person working the front desk during the morning rush
- room not cleaned until late afternoon
- strange policy requiring a room deposit at time of check-in. Based on the sign at the front desk, this deposit isn't refunded until weeks after your stay
My guess is that the property is struggling a bit and that they've had to make cut backs and implement the deposit policy to reduce their financial risk.
I think the property is good value but would have a hard time saying it is above average. That said, given the location and the price point, I would consider staying here again.Recommended for:

Lots of waits everywhere. Check in, breakfast, even can line. Rooms are spacious although a little outdated. Usually cheap but got hit with a conference week in Chicago. Definitely not worth what I paid. Better hotel is the W.

Stayed at Westin Michigan Avenue on my recent visit to Chicago. This hotel is decent, but certainly not great. It is conveniently located on Michigan and Delaware. Right in the Magnificent Mile area and across the street from the John Hancock Center. In terms of location the hotel is great. However, I felt that the hotel was a little dated. It is not as nice as other Westin locations I have visited. Our room did not even have the dual shower heads which Westin is known for.
I was also a little disappointed in the service. We had arrived late Friday night and they only had one person working the front desk. Being a SPG Gold Preferred Guest I stood in the line designated for such members. However, the employee working the front desk decided to help other guests prior to me. I'm not even complaining about not getting preferential treatment. They walked in after me. We he finally decided to help me, he wasn't every enthusiastic about his job. Once checked in the employee did not even properly direct me to my room. I had to go back and ask where the elevators were. That's not the way to treat a customer, especially a loyal one!

The centralized Michigan Avenue location is the reason to choose this hotel over others in the same price range. The rooms are on the small side, but clean, and if you’re a light sleeper you might want to bring some earplugs because the walls are on the thin side and just about any sort of revelry or commotion in the hallway will come to your attention. This is a pet friendly hotel, which I appreciate, and the staff even puts out dog bones and fresh water for the neighborhood dogs being walked outside. The Grill restaurant has some affordable options but leans towards higher end steaks and chops. The bar has a nice selection of beer and wines, though, and it’s lively in there -- not sad the way many hotel bars can be. The lobby has some hip chairs near a wall of windows where you can sit in to people watch the Miracle Mile shoppers. There is an adjacent unaffiliated coffee and juice shop, which I found convenient. Decent gym but no pool unless you count the nearby Oakton Street beach, but that’s only good three months out of the year! Not really a “staycation” hotel; more a functional one with those notoriously comfy Westin beds.

When I first went to check in I said, “Are we in a humidor?” The cedar smell was so nice, and it reminded me of my Dad’s Macanudo cigars. The concierge said it actually came from a type of white tea they make. Also, this hotel is extremely pet friendly! One of the dogs was behind the concierge desk, and one of the women that worked there was petting and loving on it! The John Hancock building is the next building over, and it is also in walking distance to the beach and theatre district. The rooms were very elegant and comfortable. I loved the beds, and desk chairs that are easy on the back.

This was my very first exposure to the Westin chain of hotels, and the beds had me sold! I remembered just being absorbed by all the fluffy pillows and comforter. It was like being hugged by the entire bed. :) The location is great - right across from the John Hancock Center, so perfect for shopping along Michigan Ave.
