My favorite museum in Madrid and one of the best in the world. It's hard to believe that it was once a private collection! It is organized chronologically, and it is like walking through a timeline of art with some of the worlds most accomplished artists in front of your eyes. Don't miss it!

I don't know the significance of this building, honestly, but I walked past it three or four times during my week in Madrid and took a selfie in front of it on a cloudy day. The gilded statuary and prominent location are what catch the eye.

Beautiful paintings, altar pieces and stained glass fill the interior of this 16th century Catholic Church on the hill behind the Prado museum. While they welcome visitors and tourists, this is an active church so please be respectful when mass is in service.

If you are a fan of Spanish literature this is an absolute must. This is the house where the great Spanish playwright lived, and it has a nice collection of pieces related to the great playwright, and there is something to say that you have walked in the same halls where he once walked and wrote.

If you love spanish food then you have to visit San Miguel Market. Located right off Plaza Mayor it has some of the best food sampling in all of Madrid. There is no seating. Plaza Mayor was, to me, the most impressive square in Madrid. The plaza is essentially the courtyard of a red palace where several different streets come together. From the center point you can look through the archways and see down each street for quite a ways.

Beyond being a historical place--it is the site of one of the original gates in the city wall surrounding Madrid--Puerta del Sol is a popular square for locals and tourists alike. There are tons of cafes and shops for day time fun (plus a street performer or two), and at night (like real night--1am or so), the clubs and bars ...

Lavapiés is Madrid's most genuine barrio. A cultural mixing pot, it's home to some of the best food in the city. Fancy an Indian? Look no further! The barrio has a buzz like no other area in the city, where you can commonly find locals singing and playing music in the square.

The inside of this building is fantastic 'baroque' design and worth the visit to see it. Restaurant on top is VERY chic, molecular cuisine and the exec chef has 2 Michelin stars. Also outdoor on the terrace has spectacular views. Expensive, so if you're thinking about price don't even go here. But the food and atmosphere is worth it if ...

A quaint plaza in the heart of Madrid. During the summer it has lots of terrazas to have lunch or dinner. Don't forget to watch your bags (i.e. hold them in your lap), however, due to the many pickpockets.
