This city is the largest in Northern Greece. The vibe is very different than Athens, it is more laid back and visually nicer. The promenade is the highlight with restaurants and cafes dotting the landscape. A great city to explore by foot.

I dig Thessaloniki, and that's even after being there in mid-August, when the whole city was empty for some holiday that sent everyone home to their villages. It was eerie. But it's a beautiful setting, on the sea, and has a hip modern art museum and a small cool subculture. Also very good food, with more varied dishes with a Turkish influence.

This city is historic, yet modern and has some of the best food and nicest people in Greece. The sea breeze keeps it pleasant, even in summer, and the entire city is alive with culture.

What’s the best tsoureki in Greece, money can buy? In my opinion, it’s Terkenlis, hands down.
I know, I know. You, your yia-yia make a mean Easter bread (τσουρέκι or tsoureki); but to be fair, I did say ‘money can buy,’ and not all of us have a family recipe or a Greek yia-yia at our disposal.
Terkenlis makes 10 kinds of tsourekia, including chocolate, orange and the traditional one with or without red dyed eggs. I tried the chocolate glazed with chocolate filling and found that so rich I can have if for breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack.
Next time you're in Thessaloniki, stop by one of Terkenlis stores (http://terkenlis.gr/Stores.aspx). You won't regret the experience (this is not a paid advertisement).
