Big park with lots of trails. Can be over crowded and parking lots can get full. Wide spread of activities for families, hikers, bikers - even golf!
Interesting park, and nice to get away from the city with just a short drive to the hills.Recommended for:

In the winter South Park Drive is closed to auto traffic to allow safer crossings for the migrating newts. Yesterday my husband and I took advantage of that to walk up the drive with the puppy we're taking care of for friends. It was a fun walk. We met lots of other dog walkers. Lots of bikes were on the road too. The best part was taking an unpaved trail up from the Big Springs picnic area. We saw three newts along the trail. They looked like plastic chew toys to the puppy, so we kept her on leash for the entire adventure.Recommended for:

The Little Farm and nature science area make a great day. Go early in the day with lettuce and carrots so the barn animals are hungry and kids don't feel rejected. Take a picnic, there's a popular small playground with climbing structure and a walk around Jewel Lake is our favorite thing to do. On a really warm day - try swimming at Lake Anza Beach! MUST DO: The Steam Trains! The Golf course isn't bad, either...Recommended for:

Best kids steam train I have been on ever. And I seem to have been on most of them in the Bay Area at this point. If you get lucky you can see live steam model trains as well. Nice long ride and they usually have at least 3 of the other steam trains on display.Recommended for:

My son and I enjoy Little Farm/Nature Centre/Lake, the Carousel, the Steam Train and sometimes the ponies. The Hiking is great and so is the Brazilian Room and the fact that I'm in wilderness within 10 minutes of my house. And this is just one modest part of the East Bay Parks District!

Pretty good size park, lots of stuff to do and see. First and foremost, there are tons of trails for hiking, running, and biking. Bigger trails for the casual visitor, but lots of little windy trails that go up and down the hillsides for the more adventurous explorers. Also a lake, botanical gardens, scenic views, campsites, etc. Good stuff.
