Tinos belongs to the complex of Cyclades, the most popular islands of the Aegean sea. Tinos was occupied by the Venetians between 1207 and 1715. From 1715 till 1821, Tinos was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire until it became a part of the Greek state after the Greek Revolution in the 1820s. For all Greeks, Tinos is a holy island for the church of Panagia Megalochari, located on a hill above Chora, the capital of the island. This church is considered the saviour of all Greece and a great religious ceremony takes place every year on August 15th, the date of the Assumption of the Virgin. It is also a frequent sight that people get off the ferries and go to the church on knees as a solemn promise to Virgin Mary.
