Living a block away from Tompkins Square Park makes this my favorite park in the City not just for it's proximity, but also for all that it has to offer. I've lived in the East Village for over a decade and I've seen the park transform from a shanty town to a first rate NYC Park.

I can't count how many weekends I spent watching the dogs play at the dog run while enjoying my breakfast of coffee and cigarettes. The big center field is the perfect oasis in the city which allows all the sun-worshippers an opportunity to get some Vitamin D and all us creepsters a chance to see what we've been missing all winter!

Let's not forget all of the art, music and summer movies that are played for our enjoyment all year around. Or the playground for kids. Or the dog runs for our little buddies!

Tompkins Square Parks plays hosts to a green market and food drives throughout the week. And what park would not be complete without the characters at the chess tables or the dirty filthy public bathrooms. That's NYC for you!

Tompkins Square Park. I love you. You're my only friend.

Not my favorite park in NYC, but it is an ok one (before sunset). You can catch live entertainment and art displays. Also has playground and a dog run.

I always want to love this park just a little more. Unfortunately, still a bit too gritty and not quite styled enough to feel like a true urban oasis. The dog park here gets very rough.

Its a simple park in a not so simple city thats located close to Katz. Its a nice place to hang out and eat a pastrami sammy.

Tompkins is a great park to people watch and use as a pit stop on a walking tour of downtown LES and SOHO. It is located in the east village near the Astor place subway stop. Plenty of good food in the area. For breakfast I recommend Cafe Orlin and their breakfast special, Velselka if you want Ukranian, Franks and Cafe Habana have crack sandwiches and all are walkable from the park which in sep/oct will be in peak form.

Description

This 16-acre park served as a military parade ground at the beginning of the 19th century. Today, it is an integral part of the East Village's daily life. In 1988, riots occurred in Tompkins Square Park as a result of attempts to clear it of homeless people and empty nearby buildings of squatters. Shades of its past remain, but it is now predominantly a peaceful place, where people come to play basketball, rollerblade, sit on the grass, or just take a walk.
