Tonala is best known for its huge--as in mammoth--outdoor market that is held in its streets on Thursdays and Sundays. Though famous for it's pottery and ceramics, you'll find all sorts of stuff--from Mexican blankets and hand knit baby clothes to paintings and handblown glass. Bargaining is expected. If you get hungry, head towards the main plaza--there are rows and rows of outdoor eateries where you just pull up a chair and chow down on Mexican favs. And if you come with someone, agree on a place to meet if you lose each other--unless you have a cell phone it can be impossible to find each other on market days. (FYI--Tonala is located about 8 miles from downtown Guadalajara--there are lots of local buses that'll get you here and back.)
