Amherst is a dumpy little town that's mostly propped up by the UB campus there. There's not much selection in decent hotels and it's mostly chain stores and restaurants, seemingly.

Basically, I'd advise anyone who enjoys beauty and don't think seeing rainbows is cheesy to go to Niagara Falls. Absolutely beautiful.

The American side of the Falls has some interesting views from the park. You can also walk over the Rainbow Bridge to the Canadian side where there is lot more to see and do.

Yes, maybe the weather in the winter is not great but otherwise this is a great place to visit. The city has a great diversity and some great places to eat because of it. Next to Canada and Lake Erie are more reasons to stop.

Go see the old Fort Erie just down the road from our home, and then drive the length of the Niagara River past the brink of the Horseshoe Falls and on to Niagara on the Lake, the Napa Valley of Canada! Fabulous sightseeing, shopping, and food in marvelous historic settings.

A half hour drive from Niagara Falls this little town is great for window shopping and a stop before you hit one of the many Wineries or Farms in the area that offer different types of fruit.
