The Trans-Karoo Express train, running roughly 27 hours from Cape Town to Johannesburg (or vice versa) is one of the great and essential experiences for any visitor to South Africa. Fabulously inexpensive in cushy tourist sleeper class (far less than a flight, and far more comfortable), this train transits the Western Cape and the Winelands, the stark wide desert of the Karoo, and the green lands of the Free State before hitting the suburbs of Jo'burg. With a fine dining car and hot-water showers (!) it's the perfect way of seeing some of the world's finest countryside, and arriving rested on the other side.Recommended for:
