The Trapp Family Lodge's motto is a "a little bit of Austria and a lot of Vermont." The original lodge was built in the 1940's by the Austrian Von Trapp family (which was loosely depicted in the Sound of Music). Today's lodge is a full-fledged resort with cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing and outdoor hot tubs. The lodge is a built in the Austrian style and the guest houses resemble small chalets. My family spent a Christmas week here and had a great time playing games in front of our fire place when we weren't out exploring.

Best cross-country ski center with miles of groomed trails. Also the home of the famous Trapp family (as in, "The Sound of Music")... so, excellent tea room with Austrian delicacies, gorgeous views, etc.

Perhaps most famous for its history, Trapp Family Lodge should rightfully be just as well-known for its fantastic mountain-side accommodation. Yes, it was the same Von Trapp family – who fled the Nazi regime in wartime Austria – that settled in Stowe and established this mountain lodge in the authentic old European style. In homage to this heritage, the movie version of the Von Trapp story – ‘The Sound of Music’ is screened every Thursday night. Outdoors, recreational opportunities abound in the lodge’s 2,500-acre estate. Skiers, mountain bikers, swimmers, tennis players and yoga aficionados will find plenty to keep them occupied. Family-friendly activities and a range of elegant Austrian-inspired dining options are also available.

This impressive Austrian-style lodge offers a wide range of dining and snacking options to make sure you never go hungry during your stay. The lodge itself hosts three separate restaurants, drawing on European culinary traditions. Local Vermont produce is featured heavily, with seasonal vegetables and fruits used alongside local fish and game in-season. The Trapp Family Lodge sits in an extensive network of cross-country ski trails, and skiers can stop off at the Pasture Cabin or deli for a quick snack before heading back to the snow. In 2012, the Trapp Brewery had recently opened, offering tastings of Trapp-brewed lager and beer.

As Maria sang in ‘The Sound of Music’, “high on a hill was a lonely goatherd.” The Trapp Family Lodge has an amazing location high on the mountain, with stunning mountain vistas from the guestrooms and public areas of the lodge. The lodge and surrounding resort is pretty extensive, so there’s not much chance of a goatherd getting too lonely.
