While in Florence in April, we visited the duomo in the morning, before 10:00 am, and there weren't any lines or major crowds. We climbed up the bell tower for the views of Florence and it was amazing!

If you're a fan of Renaissance art, this is THE place to see all the big names. There are some great highlights here but they all are within the first few rooms. The rest of the museum is quite large but unless you're a dedicated art historian, it was difficult to keep interest. It also gets quite hot in the ...

The statue of David was much more impressive than I expected. Definitely makes this worth a visit. To avoid lines, book ahead, by a Firenze card, or pay extra to the local artist's charity out front that sells reserved spots. Well worth an extra 5 Euro to save so much time. The lines are brutal.

Its a decent river to run along but it isn't great either because the sidewalks narrow near the city center and are un-even and filled with people. It isn't very clean but its still pretty to look at and see the Ponte Vecchio.

While you have to see it, (truly it is a must-see), the crowds and people hawking various junk, and rip-off restaurants surrounding the Duomo can make the piazza off putting. Like so much of Florence, going early in the morning or in the evening can help, but unlike other Italian cities, going during 'siesta' time doesn't limit the crowds. We ...
